It’s been 3 years since I’ve been to Nepal. Stepping off the plane in Kathmandu the place comes back in an avalanche of forgotten senses. The tropical heat soaks in as the traffic flies by on both sides of the taxi with horns blaring. The smog is so thick that the mountains surrounding the valley are totally obscured and I swear I can smell the bodies burning on the nearby funeral pyres at the Pashupatinath Temple. It is a raw and wild place and I am surprised at how excited I am to be back. In the spring of 2015 I came to Climb Mt Everest with Garret Madison’s team but the climb was cut short by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake which devastated much of the country. We returned in 2016 and where fortunate enough to have an incredibly successful climb with almost all members, myself included reaching the summit. These adventures were chronicled as dispatches in a partnership with InterWest and used as a backdrop to discuss and highlight risk systems, their various aspects, and how they are best used to achieve desired outcomes and mitigate, to the greatest extent possible, those outcomes that are undesired.

This spring I am returning to again guide the highest mountain in the world with Mike Hamill’s CTSS team. Mike literally wrote the book on climbing the highest peak on each continent and this springs climb can be followed on his website and blog climbingthesevensummits.com. Even more exciting for me personally is that Keith and Chip at InterWest were interested in the project and we have renewed our partnership. The dispatches that follow will touch on the climb and its progress but more importantly will delve into the basic education of risk and risk systems. Across the spectrum of human endeavor there are common pathways to success. From the mundane to the extreme there exist simple concepts, that followed, can greatly enhance not only the initial attainment of a goal but also ensure a longevity and predictability to those desired results. If you choose to follow along over the next couple of months myself and the professionals at InterWest will do our best to enforce and illuminate those concepts to you, and hopefully entertain you a bit along the way!

All the best
